How much internet speed do I need?
Speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). More people and devices online at once means you need more.
| Household | Suggested download speed |
|---|---|
| 1–2 people, browsing and HD streaming | 50–100 Mbps |
| 3–4 people, 4K streaming, video calls | 200–300 Mbps |
| 5+ people, gaming, work from home, smart home | 500 Mbps – 1 Gbps |
Rules of thumb
- A 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps; HD needs about 5–8 Mbps.
- Video calls need roughly 3–8 Mbps each, including upload.
- If you upload large files or stream live, prioritize upload speed, which favors fiber.
- Wi-Fi quality and router placement often matter as much as plan speed.
