How to choose an internet provider
Only a few providers serve any given address, so choosing is mostly about comparing the two or three real options. Work through this checklist.
1. Start with what is available at your address
Coverage maps show how much of a city a provider reports serving, not whether your street is included. Find your ZIP code to see which providers report service nearby, then confirm with each provider's address checker.
2. Match the connection type to how you use the internet
Fiber is best for uploads, video calls, gaming and large households. Cable is a strong all-rounder. DSL and fixed wireless can work well for lighter use. Read our fiber vs cable vs DSL guide.
3. Look past the promotional price
- Ask what the price is after the first 12 months.
- Check equipment rental fees, installation fees and taxes.
- Ask whether a contract or early-termination fee applies.
- Check for data caps, which apply to some cable and wireless plans.
4. Compare reliability and support
Ask neighbors which provider has fewer outages. Look for a provider that offers a satisfaction guarantee or a short trial period.
5. Consider bundles carefully
Bundling TV or mobile can lower the monthly bill, but it can also lock you in. Compare the internet-only price first.
