Moving? How to set up internet at your new home
Internet options differ from one address to the next, even within the same city. Start early, because installation appointments can take a week or more to schedule.
4 to 6 weeks before you move
- Check what is available at the new address, not just the city. Enter the ZIP code to see which providers report service nearby, then confirm with each provider's address checker.
- Compare two places if you are still choosing between neighborhoods with our compare tool.
- Ask the landlord, property manager or HOA whether the building has a preferred or exclusive provider, or already has wiring in place.
2 to 4 weeks before
- Pick a provider and plan. Use our provider matcher and the speed calculator.
- Ask about the price after any promotional period, equipment fees, installation fees and contract length.
- Schedule installation for the day you move in, or earlier if you can get access.
Moving week
- Tell your current provider your move-out date. Return rented equipment and keep the receipt.
- If you are staying with the same provider, ask whether they can transfer service. It may be cheaper than a new sign-up, or not, so compare.
- Fixed wireless and satellite plans can often be self-installed, which avoids waiting for a technician.
Move-in day
- Place the router in a central, open spot. See our Wi-Fi tips.
- Run a speed test and compare it with your plan. Contact support if it is far below.
If there is a gap
Use your phone as a hotspot for a few days, or ask the new provider about temporary service. Check your mobile plan's hotspot limits first.
